Amy’s journey began 15 years ago, with some nursing school courses and a position as unit secretary at the Sentara Martha Jefferson Urgent Care Center. There she met nurse Amy Wolfe. “She could see that nursing should be my career choice, even if I didn’t know it yet,” Hunt recalls.
Encouraged and engaged, Hunt grew from support staff to ED technician, to full-time ED technician and full-time nursing student. Wolfe helped her with applications and recommendations and kept her going, even when Hunt was driving two hours roundtrip each class day–then working an 8-hour shift at the hospital.
Hunt followed up her associate’s degree with help from a Haden Nursing Institute scholarship, which enabled her to earn her BSN, while working as an emergency department nurse. Today she is working toward her certificated emergency nurse accreditation and considering the possibility of a management role someday. For now, she enjoys “being a constant” as the Emergency Department unit coordinator, taking charge and now mentoring new grads and hires, as she herself was. Empowered by her community and her colleagues, Hunt serves the community proudly, working to wipe out the old-school stereotype of the packed, plodding hospital ED.
